Giannis Antetokounmpo Traded to Miami Heat
The Milwaukee Bucks have finalized a significant trade, sending two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and forward Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat. This marks the end of a remarkable journey for the Bucks, who celebrated their first NBA championship in half a century during his tenure.
Reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, the deal sees Miami receiving Antetokounmpo and Portis in return for Tyler Herro, Kelel Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jaxionis, three future first-round draft picks, the No. 13 pick from Tuesday’s draft, a future pick swap, and a second-round pick.
This trade comes just before the NBA draft, with interest from both the Boston Celtics and the Heat in acquiring Giannis. The decision follows a few years of uncertainty for Milwaukee after the departure of championship coach Mike Budenholzer in 2023, culminating in the Bucks failing to reach the playoffs in 2026.
Antetokounmpo, 31, played a crucial role in leading the Bucks to their 2021 championship, establishing himself as one of the greatest players in the franchise’s history. His accolades include being named one of the NBA’s 75 greatest players ever, as well as earning both the NBA MVP and Finals MVP titles twice.
Despite their glory, the Bucks faced several disappointments in the seasons that followed and a challenging 2025-26 season marred by injuries. Ultimately, they decided to shift focus to the future, even if it meant parting ways with their star player against his wishes.
Rather than sticking with a costly roster and limited flexibility, Milwaukee opted to maximize Antetokounmpo’s trade value. Miami emerged as a key player in the bidding for him, with Pat Riley showing a consistent willingness to trade future assets for the chance at more championships. With this trade, the Heat finally secure the franchise cornerstone they’ve sought for years.
