‘This is a devastating loss’

Wichita Falls (KFDX/KJTL) — An Air Force instructor at a Texas military base was killed when he ejected from his aircraft during a ground operation Monday.

Officials at Sheppard Air Force Base announced that the instructor pilot succumbed to his injuries Tuesday after being taken to a hospital following the accident.

He was identified as Captain John Robertson of the 80th Operations Support Squadron.

“This is a devastating loss to Capt. Robertson’s family and loved ones, and to the entire 80th Flying Training Wing,” said Col. Mitchell J. Koch, acting wing commander of the 80th Flying Training Wing, in a news release. mentioned in. “Captain Robertson was a highly regarded aviator and instructor pilot. Our deepest condolences go out to all who knew and loved him.”

The release did not say what may have triggered the incident that led to his ejection.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing.

Established in 1941, Sheppard Air Force Base is located approximately 20 miles south of the Oklahoma border near Wichita Falls, Texas.
