President Joe Biden on Thursday invoked executive privilege to block Congress from obtaining audio recordings of his meeting with special counsel Robert Hur.
The House Oversight Committee scheduled a raise Thursday to begin proceedings to charge Attorney General Merrick Garland with contempt of Congress for refusing to hand over the recordings.
Garland ignored a final warning in April to comply with a subpoena to listen to audio of Biden’s meeting with the special counsel.
Mr. Biden, 81, experienced confusion and “memory failure” at least seven times during the interview with Mr. Xu, according to records obtained by Breitbart News.
Deputy Attorney General Carlos Uriarte wrote in a letter to the House that the president asserted executive privilege over the requested audio recordings and protectively asserted privilege over the remaining materials in response to subpoenas that have not yet been submitted. We would like to inform you of what we are doing,” the letter said. The Judicial Oversight Committee is chaired by Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and James Comer (R-Ky.).
It added: “It has been the long-standing position of the executive branch in administrations of both parties that officials who assert claims of presidential executive privilege cannot be prosecuted for contempt of Congress.”
Garland declined to comment Thursday when asked by reporters about Biden’s executive actions.
White House Counsel Ed Siskel said, “The lack of a legitimate need for audio recordings exposes the likely purpose of chopping them up, distorting them, and using them for partisan political purposes.” ” he said. Said House Republican member. “It is inappropriate for the executive branch to request such sensitive and constitutionally protected law enforcement materials because it wants to manipulate the information for potential political gain.”
Conservative think tanks and CNN filed FOIA requests to unlock the audio recordings.
