Whoopi Goldberg Defends Harrison Butker’s Right to Speak: ‘These Are His Beliefs’

Whoopi Goldberg tells her co-hosts on ABC’s “The View” Thursday to discuss the controversy over Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker’s commencement speech at Benedictine College. He said he has a First Amendment right to speak about his beliefs.

“So the NFL released a statement saying he made this speech in his personal capacity, which is not the case and the NFL does not share his views,” Goldberg said. So, listen, I like when people say what they have to say. He attends a Catholic university. He is a devout Catholic. These are his beliefs and he welcomes them. You don’t have to believe them. You don’t have to accept them. The women sitting in that audience don’t have to accept them. Just as we want to show respect when Colin Kaepernick takes a knee, we want to show respect to those who think differently than us. ”

She went on to say, “Because a man who says he wants to be president says his means of action is to take away people’s right to say how they feel. We don’t want to be like that. It doesn’t matter what he says because people don’t want to be like, “If the women who were sitting there take his advice, it’s good for them and they’ll be happy.” Well, if they don’t, good for them, they’ll be happy in a different way. That’s my attitude.
