House Agriculture Chairman Glenn Thompson (R-Pennsylvania) announced the long-awaited farm bill, kickstarting the process of fusing the competing visions of both chambers for a $1.5 trillion policy that will support the U.S. agricultural system. .
Committees are expected to pass the multi-year package next week, but Congress must pass the bill between the Republican-controlled House’s bill and the Democratic-controlled Senate’s outline released earlier this month. It is necessary to fill the gap.
“The Agriculture, Food, and National Security Act of 2024 is the product of extensive feedback from stakeholders and members of Congress, and incorporates hundreds of bipartisan policies to address the needs of agricultural nations. ” Thompson said.
“The release of this draft bill is an important step forward in a years-long deliberative process. The price increase is one step in a larger process in the House of Representatives, and the price hikes are one step in a larger process in the House of Representatives that will not allow them to be compromised by misleading arguments, false narratives, or edicts from the Senate. I look forward to engaging with colleagues on both sides of the aisle on the markup.”
The clock is ticking. Congress has until September 30 to either compromise and pass the bill or pass a further extension. Lawmakers are expected to debate key provisions of the Inflation Control Act to combat climate change, including funding, federal nutrition programs, food assistance and forest management.
