Christian Scott roughed up as Mets routed by Marlins to continue brutal stretch

MIAMI — The second homecoming game of Christian Scott’s short major league career wasn’t as emotional as the first.

On the mound, about 45 minutes from where he grew up in Parkland, Fla., the Mets rookie on Friday dealt with traffic typically reserved for I-95 during rush hour in South Florida.

The Marlins started strong and used an early outburst to sting Scott in an 8-0 loss to the Mets at Lawndepot Park.

Overall, the Mets (20-24) lost for the sixth time in eight games.

This game was against a Marlins team that started the day with the worst record in MLB.

This was the second shutout loss for the Mets in four games.

Scott began his major league career with a stellar performance two weeks ago against Tampa Bay, pitching 6/3 innings and giving up just one earned run.

He then had a decent showing in his debut at Citi Field against the Braves (three earned runs in six innings).

On this night, the long ball killed him.

Nick Fortes hit a three-run home run in the second inning as part of a wild batting game in which Scott put nine runners on base in three innings.

However, Scott did minimal damage, allowing four earned runs on seven hits, three strikeouts, and one walk in four innings.

The Mets’ batting lineup gave them no respite.

Jesus Luzardo pitched overwhelmingly, striking out seven and allowing five hits in six shutout innings, with the Marlins’ bullpen taking care of the rest.

That night could have been even worse for Scott, who escaped with the bases loaded and no outs in the fourth inning and held the Mets to a four-run lead.

After Jeff McNeil hit an error grounder by Otto López, Vidal Brujan singled and Fortes walked to load the bases.

Scott responded by striking out Jazz Chisholm Jr., then retired Brian Delacruz and Josh Bell to load the bases.

Fortes’ three-run home run in the second was a big hit for the Marlins against Scott.

After singles by Jesus Sánchez and Nick Gordon in the first inning and a sacrifice fly by López to lead off the scoring, Fortes jumped on a sweeper and sent it over the left-field fence, putting the Mets in a 4-0 hole.

Josh Walker gave up two runs in the sixth inning, increasing the Marlins’ lead to 6-0.

After Walker’s wild pitch led to the first run, Dela Cruz hit a sacrifice fly.

The Brujans started the rally with a walk, and Fortes singled.

Grant Hartwig allowed two more runs in the eighth inning on three hits and one walk.
