The Democratic National Committee (DNC) will set up a mobile billboard in Dallas on Saturday targeting former President Trump’s comments on gun violence and reform.
A billboard accusing President Trump of putting the gun lobby ahead of Texas families was placed in an area outside the venue where he is scheduled to speak before the National Rifle Association (NRA) convention.
They feature quotes the former president has made about recent gun violence, actions they claim show where his loyalties lie.
The DNC specifically pointed to comments the former president made during a campaign hiatus after a school shooting in Iowa earlier this year left one person dead and several others injured. President Trump expressed his condolences to the victims and their families but called on his supporters to “move on.”
“From telling gun violence victims to ‘get over it’ to blocking common-sense reforms that would save lives, Donald Trump has kowtowed to the NRA and the gun lobby at every turn,” a DNC spokesperson said. Cameron Niven said in a statement shared with The Hill.
“The murder rate has skyrocketed under President Donald Trump’s presidency after he chose to roll back reforms that made it easier for criminals to carry guns,” he continued. “If President Trump returns to the White House, he will continue to put the NRA and gun control advocates above the safety of American families.”
In a statement, the DNC also praised President Biden’s dedication to gun safety efforts.
“In stark contrast, President Biden and Vice President Harris took on the gun lobby by passing the strongest federal gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years,” Niven wrote. “Trump is siding with the NRA on children’s safety, but voters in November will be siding with President Biden.”
Saturday’s speech will be the ninth time the presumptive Republican nominee has addressed gun rights groups. In his final speech, the former president promised NRA members stronger protections for their Second Amendment rights if re-elected in November.
In February, President Trump said at an NRA event in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, “I promise you that with me at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, no one will ever lay a finger on your firearm. Just like the four years I was there,” he said. . “I stand by the glorious words, ‘Thou shalt not be infringed.'”
Trump’s arrival also comes at a time of turbulence for the NRA leadership. The group’s head, Wayne LaPierre, resigned in January before he and others faced civil litigation.
