Bowles appeared on “America’s Newsroom” on Wednesday and said:[a]As a reporter for the Times, she found it very frustrating having to put blinders on my curiosity,” adding that as a result, she “started writing this book, but ended up quitting the newspaper.” And each chapter is a little journey, a feature on what I would have written if I had stayed on staff.”

“In a progressive world, if you question something, you’re immediately called a fascist.”

Bari Weiss, former New York Times reporter and Bowles’ wife, recently published a work“Curiosity is what drove Nellie out of the club. But it gives her a place in a new club, one that we at the Free Press think the majority of Americans actually belong to.” ” he wrote.

“I became a reporter because I couldn’t trust people in authority. . . . As a reporter, I’ve spent over 10 years pursuing that curiosity,” Bowles said. Told. “It was hard to suddenly turn it off. It was hard to constantly censor what I was watching, trying so hard to close one eye and not notice anything untoward, especially when there was so much to see. did.”

Bowles went on to say that while working for the Times was originally her dream job, she soon realized that the topics she wanted to research and write about were “beyond the scope of a Times reporter.”

After Bowles left the Times, she and Weiss started the Free Press. She said she has no concrete plans to go out and change minds, but just wants to question issues she feels are important, especially those related to progressive policies.

“I’m from San Francisco, I’ve lived there all my life, and if you don’t look around you and the streets and start to question some of the ideas that got us to that place,” Bowles said. I think you’re stupid.” I think you’re a complete fool if you don’t. ”

Bowles declined to identify as a liberal or conservative, insisting he was trying to be fair-minded.

“In the progressive world, if you question something, you’re immediately called a fascist,” she says.

“Obviously, I reject this label, but I also reject the premise: The San Francisco State Attorney’s Office, which at the time said it shouldn’t prosecute crimes and shouldn’t take down drug traffickers. I think it’s okay to take the opinion of “Drug dealers are victims too, so it’s okay to look at that and say that’s ridiculous, whether it’s putting them in jail or prosecuting them.” ”
