Apple is offering a settlement of up to $349 to U.S. residents who experience audio issues with their iPhone 7 or 7 Plus between September 16, 2016 and January 3, 2023.
CBS News report The tech giant announced that it has set aside $35 million in compensation for users who reported covered audio issues to Apple or paid for repairs related to the issues. The settlement comes as a result of a lawsuit filed in 2019 by plaintiffs Joseph Casillas and Dejontai Banks, who claimed that iPhone 7 devices they purchased in 2017 would not make a sound if they did not use the speaker feature. He claimed that he experienced distortion and was unable to hear the person on the other end of the phone.
According to the complaint, “Plaintiff Casillas noticed that when he tried to play a video on his cell phone, the sound on his cell phone was distorted by static. Plaintiff Banks did not use the speaker function on her iPhone. I noticed that I couldn’t hear the caller. These are common signs of a defective audio IC.
The lawsuit alleged that the audio chip problem was caused by the phone’s improper case, and that Apple was aware of the problem but routinely refused free repairs to affected devices. However, in its settlement agreement, Apple denied the existence of the audio problem and insisted it did nothing fraudulent or illegal.
