Officials blame climate change as mosquitoes swarm Texas town

As Texas towns battle another spring surge of mosquitoes, officials are pointing to climate change.

Miss Burley, who lives in the Houston suburb of Conroe, Texas, said of the problem: “When I open my car door to go somewhere, there are 10 mosquitoes inside.” The Washington Post reported.

Varley, who has lived in the Montgomery County area for nearly a decade, told The Washington Post that he had never seen conditions this bad. Areas of Texas have always been known as ideal habitat for mosquitoes, but the flooding rains in recent weeks have given the pesky insects even more ideal territory to breed and spread. Ta.

“They’re attracted to me. No one else gets bitten by mosquitoes like I do,” local resident Linda Adams told The Washington Post. “I also had red hair when I was a kid. I think that has something to do with it.”

Ms Adams said she never left the house without spraying herself with bug spray, claiming it was “the only way to get through the day”.

“It has to be at least 40% DEET,” Adams says.

Local tennis instructor Josue Medina echoed similar sentiments, telling The Washington Post that this year’s mosquito swarms are not only more numerous, but also larger.

“Mosquito season is always bad, but now it’s even worse,” he says.

Understanding the severity of the mosquito-borne disease dengue fever

Max Vigilant, director of mosquito and vector control in nearby Harris County, told The Washington Post that while previous sampling has shown mosquito levels comparable to 2022 and 2023, He said it is nearly impossible to fully count the number of individuals.

But residents who notice the problem worsening may point to climate change as the culprit, Vigilant argued, with “high temperatures” arriving in the region earlier this year and large numbers of mosquitoes. He pointed out that the possibility of this happening is increasing.

“This is how climate change has affected Harris Country,” Vigilant told the outlet.

Harris County is home to more than 50 species of mosquitoes, and the county’s public health department, where Vigilant works, is focused on researching insecticides that target mosquitoes that can carry diseases such as West Nile virus. The report points out that there are

Meanwhile, residents continue to struggle with the problem while trying to continue with their daily lives.

“This is right here,” Medina told The Washington Post, pointing to a large red welt next to her knee. “I got this yesterday.”
