Marco Rubio clashes with Kristen Welker over accepting the 2024 election results

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) on Sunday refused to commit to accepting the results of the 2024 election, instead placing the blame on Democrats for raising questions about the credibility of the election.

Asked on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” if he would accept the results of this year’s election “no matter what,” Rubio said: No, if it’s an unfair election, I think it will be contested by each side. ”

“Meet the Press” anchor Kristen Welker repeated the “whoever wins” part of the question, to which Rubio responded, “I think you’re asking the wrong person.”

“It’s the Democrats who have opposed every Republican victory since 2000: Hillary Clinton,” he continued.

This was likely a reference to a small group of Democrats in Congress who fought to certify George W. Bush’s 2004 victory over John Kerry in Ohio. Former Secretary of State Clinton formally conceded to former President Trump in the 2016 election. The morning after the election.

“Not a single Democrat has refused to concede. Hillary Clinton has conceded. Senator, will you accept the election results?” Welker responded.

“Hillary Clinton claimed the election was stolen from her and that Trump was unfair,” Rubio said, before Welker interjected, “but she admitted it.” Ta.

“[Clinton] President Trump said it was illegitimate. She said the election was stolen. Kamala Harris agreed. “By the way, some Democrats currently serving in Congress voted in 2004 not to certify Ohio’s electors because those machines had been … tampered with,” Rubio later added.

In 2019, Clinton called Trump “ “An illegitimate president,” he said, suggesting he “knows” the 2016 election was stolen from him and accusing his campaign of voter suppression and voter purges.

When Mr. Rubio continued, Mr. Welker repeatedly tried to interject. “And now the Democrats are saying they won’t certify 2024 because Mr. Trump is an insurrectionist and unfit to serve as president. So you have to ask them. This question to the Democrats on the show. Have you ever done that?”

Welker then said that Rubio voted to certify the 2020 election despite pressure from some of his Republican colleagues who falsely claimed the 2020 election was stolen from Trump. It pointed out. “Democracy is sustained by people’s trust in elections and their willingness to abide by their results,” Rubio said at the time.

She also asked Rubio, whose name has been floated as Trump’s running mate, whether the former president’s claims that the election was stolen continue to “undermine the American people’s faith in our democracy.”

“I think what undermines people’s confidence in elections is when you have places like Wisconsin, where there are over 500 illegal mailboxes, or places like Georgia, where there are over 500 illegal mailboxes,” Rubio said.

Welker, a Florida Republican, went on to accuse NBC News of censoring coverage of the Hunter Biden laptop controversy, a charge Welker repeatedly denied.
