Climber found dead on Alaska’s Denali, the highest peak in North America

A climber was found dead on Monday on Mount Denali, North America’s highest mountain, authorities said. The day before, his family told rangers they hadn’t heard from him in several days.

Denali National Park Conservancy said in a statement that the climber used a satellite communication device to contact his family while climbing Denali alone. Rangers discovered the climbers’ tents and used information gleaned from interviews and location data from satellite device accounts to determine where they were.

The park said a climbing team reported seeing climbers crossing from the 17,200-foot plateau to the 18,200-foot Denali Pass last Wednesday.

Data shows the device has not changed location since Thursday, “suggesting that the fall from Denali Pass occurred that day,” the park said.

The climber’s body was discovered on Monday, and the park said a recovery operation would take place once weather conditions permitted. The climber’s name has not been released.

They are among at least 14 people to have died in falls on this section of Denali’s West Buttress Route since 1980, the park said. According to the park, about 350 climbers are currently taking this route, but most of them are few as it is still early in the climbing season.
