CLEVELAND — Kodai Senga is battling new discomfort that is slowing his rehabilitation.
The Mets’ right-hander missed a scheduled bullpen session Sunday because he felt tightness in his triceps, manager Carlos Mendoza said.
Mendoza said Senga was examined by the team’s medical personnel and there was a “low-level” concern about the tightness.
“He came back from a shoulder injury and didn’t want to take any risks or push himself too hard,” Mendoza said.
Team officials expect Chiga to resume pitching on Tuesday and be on the mound in the bullpen later in the week.
Chiga is pitching in the bullpen to work on his mechanics before entering minor league rehab.
Chiga started the season on the disabled list after not pitching in spring training due to shoulder tightness.
“I can’t say I’m frustrated,” Mendoza said of the current situation. “We’re dealing with a unique athlete and he just doesn’t want to push.”
David Peterson is on the 60-day injured list and eligible to be ruled out on May 27th, but the Mets have decided whether to add him to the major league roster or option him to Triple-A Syracuse. Before making a decision, he will begin his final rehabilitation.
The left-hander, who is recovering from offseason hip surgery, pitched five innings at Syracuse on Sunday, allowing five hits, one earned run, one walk and five strikeouts.
Peterson posted a 0.46 ERA in five rehab starts.

Drew Smith will play catch and have a bullpen session Tuesday. Mendoza said the earliest Smith could return from injured reserve is next week after he completes a minor league rehab assignment.
The Mets traded Johan Ramirez to the Dodgers for cash. Ramirez was drafted twice by the Mets this season and was traded both times.
Joey Wendle was released by the Mets. The veteran infielder was designated for assignment by the club last week.
Grant Hartwig was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse to make roster space for Monday’s starter, Tyler Megill.
The Mets enter this game with 11 wins and 11 losses on the road this season.
The team’s .267 road batting average was the second highest in the major leagues, and the Mets were fifth with a .333 on-base percentage on the road. The team’s road slugging percentage of .408 ranked seventh.
