Democrats Putting Politics over Protecting FDIC Workers

Republicans said Monday that the Biden administration is putting politics above protecting employees at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) as Democrats seek to secure control of the embattled agency.

FDIC Chairman Martin Gruenberg said he would step down once a replacement has been chosen.

“In light of recent events, I am prepared to step down from my responsibilities once a successor has been identified,” Gruenberg said in a statement. Said In a written statement. “Until then, I will continue to fulfill my responsibilities as Chair of the FDIC, including transforming the FDIC’s workplace culture.”

An independent investigation into the agency found it had a “hostile, abusive and unprofessional” working environment.

The Associated Press pointed out that:

The incidents ranged from field offices to headquarters in Washington, D.C., and described a “‘misogynistic,’ ‘patriarchal,’ ‘closed,’ and ‘outdated’ workplace culture, where favoritism is the norm and management “This occurred in a ‘good old man’s world’ where senior executives known for rallying around themselves and pursuing romantic relationships with subordinates enjoyed long careers with no noticeable negative effects,” the report said. There is.

More than 500 workers reported issues such as harassment and discrimination.

Republicans were stunned that Gruenberg would only step down after a successor was confirmed, ensuring Democratic control of the agency.

Sen. Tim Scott (R-South Carolina), ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee, said in a statement:

If President Biden and the Democratic Party were truly serious about supporting employees and fixing the FDIC’s toxic work culture, they would immediately call for Chairman Grunberg to resign. This strategy of delay clearly shows that the current administration is prioritizing its own political agenda over protecting workers.

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) said in an emailed statement:

The FDIC frat party is over and it is past time for President Biden to take serious action. By failing to remove and immediately remove Chairman Martin Gruenberg to ensure Democrats maintain control of the FDIC board, the Biden administration is putting politics ahead of protecting women in the workplace. . Mr. Gruenberg needs to leave the country today, and all those who perpetuated this culture of fraud should be investigated and immediately removed from the FDIC. As a result, public servants are focused on serving the American people rather than acting in Animal House.

House Financial Services Committee Chairman Patrick McHenry (R-North Carolina) Said In a statement:

“Chairman Gruenberg is once again prioritizing the Democratic Party’s politicized regulatory agenda over the integrity of the FDIC and the stability of our financial system,” McHenry said. “His intention to resign will be welcome news to FDIC employees who have been subjected to a horrific culture of fraud and abuse, but this announcement is too little, too late. Significant institutional changes at the FDIC Reform is needed now. There is a clear succession plan, and if he correctly steps down today, the agency’s operations will continue unabated. This reflects Chairman Gruenberg’s actions. This is another example of refusing to accept responsibility for.

“I urge all Democrats to join me in calling for Chairman Gruenberg’s immediate removal from office,” he continued.
