Angel Reese already has some accomplishments on her sports resume.
The team owner is now the newest owner.
The DC Power Football Club has announced that the WNBA star will be part of the team’s ownership group, which will begin play in the USL Super League, a new women’s professional soccer organization, this summer.
The Washington, D.C.-based team will call Audi Field home, which also hosts D.C. United in MLS.
Reese’s decision to become part of an ownership group that also includes D.C. United and local community and business leaders stems from her desire to help raise the profile of women’s sports. .
It’s unclear how much interest Reese, from Randallstown, Maryland, has in his new team.
“I want to support the growth of women’s sports and elevate the status of female athletes across the board,” Reese, who is currently with the Chicago Sky, said in a statement. She added, “We are honored to take over and support Power FC and invest in women’s soccer in the DMV community.”
Reese made a name for herself by playing against Caitlin Clark in the past two March Madness games and leading the LSU Tigers to the 2023 NCAA Tournament championship.
She is among a recent new generation of college athletes who have used name, image, and likeness (NIL) contracts to capitalize on their stardom and earn a paycheck while in school.
As Reese enters her first year as a professional, she is also being credited with helping raise the profile of women’s basketball.
“Angel’s decision to join us as a founding investor in Power FC is groundbreaking,” DC United CEO and Co-Chairman Jason Levine said in a statement. “Angel, a Maryland native, is extremely passionate about being a catalyst for positive change in women’s sports, not only at the DMV, but globally, and inspiring the next generation of female athletes. We are thrilled that she is a shareholder. I look forward to working with the board as a member of the Board of Directors.”
Reese told The Athletic. She’s still trying to figure things out in the sports business world, but says she hopes to one day own a team outright.
“I want to do everything I can and help that organization in any way I can,” she told the outlet. “More women are going to start owning more things, and I’d love to be able to own my own team one day too. I’m looking forward to that. I’d love to own a WNBA team, too.”
The USL Super League was granted First Division status by US Soccer earlier this year, placing it on the same level as the NWSL.
Washington, D.C., is one of eight markets that will be part of the new league, which also includes teams in Brooklyn, Charlotte, North Carolina, Dallas/Fort Worth, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Tampa, Florida, Lexington, Kentucky, and Spokane. Please wash.
