Willis, the prosecutor who built the election interference case against Trump, defeated progressive lawyer Christian Wise Smith in the primary. She will face Republican Courtney Cramer in the fall.

“Voters want a district attorney who is fair, treats everyone equally, and works hard, and they know I have those qualities,” Willis told reporters after his victory. He said he sent a message.

Judge McAfee, who was appointed presiding judge in Georgia v. Trump, will keep his seat after winning a bipartisan election.

A loss for either Willis or McAfee could have delayed or derailed the former president’s trial.

Trump and the other defendants are trying to have Willis removed from the case because of her romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, a special prosecutor hired by prosecutors to help oversee the trial.

The accusations against Willis first surfaced in a complaint filed in early January by Ashley Merchant, a former White House assistant to Michael Roman and a former member of the Trump campaign. The complaint alleges that Wade and Willis had an inappropriate romantic relationship. During their long-term affair, Willis paid Wade handsomely for his work, while reaping equal benefits from the vacation time he paid her, which she later claimed to have paid for. He claims he has repaid the money.

In August, Trump and 18 others were indicted on charges of participating in a massive conspiracy to illegally overturn Trump’s narrow defeat to Democratic candidate Joe Biden in Georgia’s 2020 presidential election. The defendants were all charged with violating Georgia’s anti-extortion statute, known as the Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).

Mr. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
