Mayor Quinton Lucas said Thursday that Kansas City has “separated” from the social media employee with whom it shared a residence after Harrison Butker delivered a commencement speech at Benedictine University last week.
The Kansas City Chiefs kicker is under fire after giving a commencement speech at Benedict College. In his speech, he specifically mentioned female graduates embracing their “vocation” as “housewives” and President Biden’s stance on abortion as a Catholic. He also mentioned the LGBTQ community in relation to Pride Month.
“We would like to remind you that Harrison Butker lives in Lee City Summit,” the city’s official X account wrote on May 15.

“The city of Kansas City has fulfilled its responsibility,” Lucas said. He told KCMO Radio.. “We’re all looking forward to moving on and playing for the Chiefs. [and] It allows the city to do what it is supposed to do in providing basic services.”
The social media account removed the post and later published a short apology.
“We apologize. [sic] “Regarding my previous tweet, it was shared by mistake,” the post read.
Addressing the controversy after the post was removed last week, Lucas said it was “clearly inappropriate.”
“Earlier this evening a message appeared on the City’s public account that was clearly inappropriate for a public account. The City has appropriately apologized for the error, will review access to the account, and will ensure similar material is not shared through public channels in the future.”

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey vowed to take action against the city following the post, saying in an interview with Outkick’s Charlie Arnolt that he had “demanded certain records from the city regarding the management of the social media accounts which exposed Harrison Butker’s personal information in retaliation for the free expression of his religious beliefs.”
“Let’s paint this with the right brush: This is a government retaliating against an individual who has expressed sincerely held religious beliefs. There is no clearer example of a violation of the Missouri Human Rights Act,” Bailey added.
The specific employees remain unknown.
