Progressive group to circulate mobile billboard blasting RFK Jr. at Libertarian event

Progressive groups plan to mount a traveling billboard campaign slamming independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy as he seeks to secure the party’s support at the Libertarian Party’s national convention this weekend.

MoveOn Political Action will be touring with “Exposing RFK Jr.” billboard trucks starting Friday, telling voters that a vote for Kennedy is a vote for former President Trump, the group confirmed Thursday.

The billboards will feature messages such as “Kennedy Jr. supports abortion restrictions,” “He’s not getting away with this” and “Exposing Kennedy Jr. for who he really is.”

Kennedy, an independent who lost in the Democratic primary and was considering joining the Libertarian Party, is due to speak at the party’s convention in Washington this weekend.

The environmental lawyer spoke at the Libertarian Party’s annual convention in February, sparking speculation that he might run for president.

Multiple sources told The Hill that he had lightly considered switching parties given the growing support he was receiving from party members, strategists and activists, but ultimately ruled it out last month.

In doing so, his campaign noted that Kennedy “aligns with the Libertarian Party on many points,” pointing to his positions on civil rights and keeping the United States out of foreign wars.

Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, is also expected to speak in a surprise rally this weekend, with the former president’s unexpected appearance highlighting the threat Kennedy could pose in November.

Kennedy is seeking to win voting rights in all 50 states, but political strategists predict that just a few states would probably be enough to create a “blocking” effect.

Most national polls suggest that Kennedy could do more damage to President Biden’s approval ratings than President Trump’s in a hypothetical general election scenario.

A national Fox News poll released last week gave Trump a one-point lead over Biden among registered voters in the head-to-head race, but when the poll included fellow independent candidate Cornel West, Trump’s lead over Biden widened to three points.

But Kennedy still trails far behind Biden and Trump, with about 8.6% of the national vote, compared with about 41.5% for Trump and 40.2% for Biden, according to The Hill/Decision Desk HQ polling index.

The Hill has reached out to the Kennedy campaign for comment.
