On “CNN News Central” on Thursday, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) acknowledged that “the whole reason” border legislation was negotiated in the Senate in the first place was at the “urging of Republicans.” Republicans said they wanted to pass a bipartisan border security bill. They also argued that Democrats “think border security is important.”
“Remember, we got into these bipartisan negotiations all at the behest of Republicans. Republicans said they wanted to pass a bipartisan border security bill. They appointed negotiators, Senator McConnell (R-Ky.), the Republican leader, was there, and we negotiated for four months. We delivered every priority that Republicans asked for, and the leadership of the Republican Senatorial Caucus approved the final bill,” Murphy said. “Then Donald Trump said, don’t pass any border security bill at all, because I want chaos on the border in this election, and the Republicans did an about-face. Now we believe that border security is important. The people that we represent believe that border security is important. And so we’re not going to abandon this bipartisan bill that we worked so hard on just because we failed once.”
