Media Matters, a nonprofit that rails against conservatives, announced on Thursday that it had fired dozens of employees, including executives and journalists, and appeared to cite a legal battle with Elon Musk as the reason for the firings.
Breitbart News reported that Musk’s social media platform X sued Media Matters in November for trying to link advertising on the platform to neo-Nazi content, a tactic used by extremist groups to launch boycotts of conservative media companies’ revenue streams.
Media Matters president Angelo Carusone announced the cuts, signaling the organization’s future is uncertain.
“We face legal attacks on multiple fronts, and given the rapidly changing media environment, we have to be very intentional about how we allocate our resources to stay effective,” Carusone said. Said“No one else can do this like Media Matters, which is why we’re taking this action now to ensure we remain sustainable, strong and successful no matter what the future holds.”
“There’s a reason why far-right billionaires are leading armies of lawyers attacking Media Matters – they know how effective our work is, and that scares them,” she said.
