None of Gavin Newsom’s 1,200 ‘Tiny Homes’ Has Opened, a Year Later

California Governor Gavin Newsom (Democrat) has promised to build 1,200 “tiny houses” to serve as homeless shelters in several California cities by 2023, but CalMatters reports that none have opened yet.

In March 2023, Gov. Gavin Newsom stood before a crowd at the Cal Expo Events Center in Sacramento. promisedHe plans to send 1,200 tiny houses to shelter homeless residents in the state capital and three other parts of the state.

There were multiple delays and policy shifts on everything from how the state would fund the homes to the ability of local cities and counties to find places to put them — the state blames local governments for the delays — but even though local leaders quickly approved project locations, the tiny homes never came to fruition.

In Sacramento, at least, construction of tiny homes has begun. In San Diego, proposed sites are still being tested. In San Jose, state funding is still months away and projects won’t be completed until next summer. And in Los Angeles, no sites have been approved yet.

In 2021, Governor Newsom boasted that California had become a model for tackling homelessness after the Biden administration adopted a policy to pay for hotel and motel stays for homeless Californians and even purchase the hotels.

Homelessness remains a problem in California. The homeless population is strike In San Francisco, prices have fallen to their lowest level in a decade, but in Los Angeles they were still on the rise as of last year.
