Maryland family’s SUV bursts into flames while they slept, video shows

Recently, a family of five was woken up by the sound of an airbag exploding as their SUV burst into flames in their Maryland driveway.

Vicky and Philip Hill have twins, age 5, and a seven-year-old. Fox 5 If the SUV was parked in the garage and suddenly caught fire, it could cause an explosion in the house, which is located right next to the gas line.

Footage from the home’s doorbell camera shows smoke starting to come from the vehicle just before 6 a.m. on May 14, then bursting into flames.

After emergency responders arrived and put out the fire, all that was left inside the vehicle was charred debris and scattered glass from the explosion.

“At first I was scared because I thought someone had broken in,” Vicki Hill told FOX 5 about the explosion. “When my husband told me to call 911 because the car was on fire, my first priority was to get my kids out of the house.”

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, but the Hills believe it may have been caused by an ABS actuator pump seal in the braking system of a vehicle the family had previously worked on.

Nissan previously recalled some vehicles between 2015 and 2019 for actuator pump seals that could leak, causing electrical problems and, in rare cases, fires. It’s unclear if Hill’s SUV was included in the recall.
