Over 40 Mayors Plead with Biden to Create Jobs Program — for Migrants

More than 40 mayors and county officials from across the U.S. are pleading with President Joe Biden to speed up the issuance of work permits to help millions of immigrants released into the country find American jobs.

in letter This week, ahead of President Biden’s inauguration, New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D), Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D), Boston Mayor Michelle Wu (D) and 38 other mayors and county officials again called on the federal government to quickly issue work permits to potentially millions of migrants released into the U.S. interior.

“We, leaders representing local governments across the country, are writing to respectfully request that the Department of Homeland Security use its authority to grant parole to long-term illegal immigrants and recently arrived immigrants to streamline the work authorization process,” they wrote.

Our request is based on the belief that the dignity of legal permission to work should be extended to residents born in Mexico, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic and other countries. This would be a positive step. These people have embraced America as their home, and for decades they have worked hard, paid taxes, raised families, started businesses and bought homes. Both recent arrivals and long-time undocumented residents are at risk of unsafe working conditions and exploitation, often when they lack access to work authorization and the protections that go with it. We strongly encourage that in developing this program, worker safety and worker choice should be prioritized and that a worker’s legal presence is not tied solely to employment by a single employer. [Emphasis added]

The request from mayors and county officials comes in the wake of a recent wave of mass migration. Secured Most of the job growth under Biden has come from newly arrived immigrants.

Meanwhile, job growth for native-born Americans has stagnated.

More than Ten million Under the Biden administration, the U.S. plans to encounter 150 million migrants by the end of fiscal year 2024, but about 9.5 million migrants have already been encountered at the border, including about 8 million at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The researchers found that approximately 70 to 90 percent Under the Biden administration, 70% of migrants arriving at the border have been released into the U.S. interior.
