“I was on fire while I was running.”

Doctors said Alijaji suffered burns over about 30 percent of his body and was expected to remain in hospital for at least another week or two, but the victim said he had tried to protect his soon-to-be wife, saying he was “protecting my fiancee with my own life.”

He said he was not in much pain during the interview, but suggested the pain was severe when the incident first occurred.

The suspect attempted to flee immediately after the incident but was eventually arrested by police. As a result, public transport services were delayed following the incident.

Alijaji was on the train with her fiancée and cousin on their way to see the Statue of Liberty when the attacker, later identified as Niall Taylor, 49, boarded the train with a cup full of liquid.

“He had a cup,” Alijaji said, pointing to one on his bedside table, “like this one, maybe a smaller cup, with some kind of oil in it, and he started a fire and dumped it all out.”

Alijaji’s shirt quickly caught fire and he began slapping the fire with his hands. “I touched myself to put it out,” he said.

“So I was on fire while I was running,” he added.

The victim was concerned that Taylor had gotten off the train to get more liquid. At some point during the incident, Ali Jaj managed to remove his shirt and put out the fire.

Alijaji said he didn’t think his burns were that bad because they had blisters when he arrived at the hospital.

The severity of the burns is still unknown.
