The local Jewish federation, an umbrella organization for Jewish community leaders, statement Saturday night (emphasis in original):
This morning at approximately 5 a.m., two assailants fired shots into Bais Chaya Mushka Elementary School at Dufferin and Finch. We are grateful that no one was injured in this heinous act of hate and offer our steadfast support to the staff, students and family of Bais Chaya Mushka.
This was a brazen and deliberate attempt to intimidate our community. But even in the face of anti-Semitism, our Jewish community is strong and resilient. We will continue to do what we have always done: live openly and proudly as Jews.
…
Tonight marks the beginning of Lag Baomer. This holiday reminds us that even as we exercise heightened vigilance, our Jewish unity and pride are at the heart of our strength. We must never cower or retreat from our Jewish lives, and we will never let anti-Semites prevent us from living our lives as ourselves.
Lag Ba’Omer, the 33rd day of the traditional grain count, or “omer,” is a Jewish festival based on mystical traditions. It marks the end of the mourning period and involves bonfires, games and barbecues.
