During a street takeover earlier this month, a 15-year-old boy tried to steal a deputy’s vehicle while members of a crowd punched and kicked it, police said.
The boy allegedly opened the driver’s door of a San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department vehicle and “attempted to pass a deputy and patrol officer” at an intersection in Highland. The Associated Press reported.citing a statement from the sheriff’s office on Thursday.
“These individuals have no fear of law enforcement and their actions are extremely disturbing.”
According to the Associated Press, the deputy was able to close the door and flee the scene of the brawl in his car just after midnight on May 11. video Photos obtained by detectives showed members of the “rioters” slamming the windows of the deputy’s car and kicking it, causing the windshield to crack.
About 100 people gathered at the intersection to illegally occupy the road, and fire hydrants were opened to prevent vehicles from skidding, the media reported, citing a sheriff’s office statement.
A 15-year-old male was arrested at a home in Menifee on suspicion of attempted carjacking and felony criminal damage to property, according to the Associated Press.
Gloria Huerta, a spokeswoman for the department, told the outlet that the deputy’s decision to drive away was probably the safest option: “These individuals have no fear of police and their behavior is very disturbing.”
