Star Wars Creator George Lucas has defended the film series from eagle-eyed critics who have criticized it for being made up of a predominantly white, male cast.

Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday, Lucas responded to criticism of his first six films, insisting that the characters were primarily aliens, not white men.

Lucas added that the idea is that all people are equal, whether they’re big and hairy or green.

“They’ll say, ‘It’s just white guys,'” Lucas says.. “Most people are aliens! Big and hairy, green, whatever. We should all be accepted for who we are. We’re all equal.”

Lucas responded to criticism about the lack of female cast members by asking who they thought the heroes of the film were, pointing out that Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia was the leader of the rebels.

“Who do you think are the heroes in these stories?” he asked. “Who do you think Princess Leia is? She’s the leader of the rebellion. She’s the one who’s trying to save the rebellion with this young kid who knows nothing and this loudmouth, know-it-all guy who can’t do anything, along with these buffoons… And it’s the same with Queen Amidala.”

“You can’t just put a woman in pants and make her a hero,” Lucas continued. “They can wear a dress, they can wear whatever they want. It’s their brains and their ability to think, to plan, to reason. That makes them heroes.”
