California lawmakers are considering a new bill that would ban schools from notifying parents if their child decides to change gender.
The new bill is 1955The bill has the backing of State Superintendent Tony Thurmond, who was ousted last year for being disruptive at a Chino Valley, California, school board meeting. The board overrode Gov. Gavin Newsom’s policy for the whole of California and approved a policy requiring schools to notify parents if a child wants to change their gender.
The state sued the school district over the state policy requirements, but was subsequently blocked by federal Judge Roger Benitez, an appointee of President George W. Bush. (Newsom has since begun to vigorously attack Benitez over gun control.)
California Democrats are now trying to enact Newsom’s policies into law. Article AB 1955 states:
This bill would prohibit school districts, county offices of education, charter schools, and state special education schools, as well as members of the boards or agencies of these educational agencies, from enacting or enforcing policies, rules, or administrative regulations that require employees or contractors to disclose information related to a student’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression to any other person without the student’s consent, except as otherwise required by law. This bill would prohibit employees or contractors of these educational agencies from being required to make such disclosures, except as otherwise required by law. This bill would prohibit employees or contractors of school districts, county offices of education, charter schools, and state special education schools, as well as members of the boards or agencies of these educational agencies, from taking retaliation or adverse action against an employee because the employee has assisted a student in the exercise of certain rights, work activities, or the provision of certain instruction, as provided.
Mr Thurmond praised the bill last week, saying it would prevent the forced “outing” of transgender students: “When and how to come out should be a discussion between students and their parents, not something that should be arbitrarily imposed by school authorities on unsuspecting young people.”
Newsom also argues that the school policy is an attempt to prevent “outing” students who would face bullying if their classmates found out about their new gender identity.
Asked by Breitbart News last year to defend his policy, Newsom could not explain why parents should not be notified.
