The small business owner and former city council member won a close primary and now is tasked with flipping one of the most Democratic congressional districts in Texas to the Republican side, according to the Associated Press.

Darrell Day, a Republican who served on the Arlington City Council and founded an executive search firm, defeated former Southern Methodist University football player David Blewett in the runoff election for the Republican primary in the state’s 32nd Congressional District on Tuesday.

Day will face Texas Representative Julie Johnson, a Democrat, in the general election in November. The winner will replace Democratic Representative Collin Allred, who is running for the U.S. Senate.

Republicans will have an uphill battle to flip this district, given the dense urban areas north and east of downtown Dallas, which was redrawn after the 2020 census to add more heavily Democratic areas.

If Day wins the race, his victory would be a historic underdog victory.

Allred, who has represented the district since 2019, was up for reelection in 2022 after redistricting with 65% of the vote. In 2020, he won in his old district with just 52% of the vote.

Leading election analysts have rated Texas’ 32nd Congressional District race as either “Democrat Strong” or “Safe Democrat.”
