Fisherman Reels In 131-Pound Paddlefish To Tie North Dakota State Record For The Biggest Of All-Time

Great find! Now I’m looking forward to my upcoming vacation!

A fisherman tied the record for catching the largest paddlefish in North Dakota. 131 pound monsterEven more amazing, he accomplished this just two days after the state’s spoonbill fishing season opened. (Related: “Million Dollar” Marco Wins $3.2 Million in Four-Leg Par Lace Swap)

Paddlefish are one of the strangest looking fish found in North America, but despite their appearance they are very popular with anglers. However, because paddlefish are filter feeders and do not eat normal prey, they can be very difficult to catch, requiring different tactics to catch.

The most common way to catch this monster is using a technique called “snagging,” which is the act of hooking a fish. Tyler Hughes and his wife used this technique to reel in this behemoth while fishing the Yellowstone River in early May. Though it was hooked on a 10/0 treble hook, they managed to catch a 131-pound fish that went down in history as the new North Dakota state record, of course.

Heading to South Florida at the end of July, paddlefish aren’t on my target list, but blogging this story has me motivated to get some fishing in the tropics.
