China Phillips is embracing change one step at a time.

After much consideration, Phillips, 56, decided it was time to join a 12-step program and chose Al-Anon.

“The rumors are true. I definitely went to a 12-step program,” Phillips said while chatting with fans on “California Preachin’.” YouTube Series“I was in a 12-step program years ago, decades ago, and now I’m in a new 12-step program. It’s called Al-Anon.”

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) targets individuals who suffer from alcoholism, while AlAnon focuses on loved ones who are affected by alcoholism. Both groups follow AA practices, including the 12-step program to overcome addiction.

“I never really understood what Al-Anon was, but now I’m enlightened,” Phillips said. “I went to a meeting, I pulled a swab out of my ear and put it in my mouth and really listened to what was going on there. So yeah, I was enlightened. I feel like I’m a sick puppy.”

“To be honest with you, death is in the back of my mind almost 24 hours a day,” Phillips said during a walk through rural Santa Ynez. “Billy would tell you I talk about it a lot. I mean, multiple times a week, I’ll say, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe I’m going to die. I can’t believe I’m going to die.'”

China’s Daughter The Mamas and the Papas singer John and Michelle Phillips said that as Christians, they believe in life after death, but they still have questions about what happens when they die and feel anxious about “living their best life now.”
