Trump to Be Sentenced July 11, Four Days Before Republican Convention Starts July 15

President Donald Trump is scheduled to be sentenced in New York on July 11, just four days before the Republican National Convention begins on July 15 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where delegates are expected to vote for Trump as their presidential candidate.

Trump was convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records, normally a misdemeanor, but the statute of limitations had expired. District Attorney Alvin Bragg prosecuted the case as a felony, arguing that the alleged falsification of business records was done to cover up a federal crime. Trump had never been convicted of such a crime, and prosecutors did not specify what crimes had been committed, nor were they required to prove any of its elements.

The former president has maintained throughout the trial that this was a form of election interference and a rigged trial in which Judge Juan Merchan was chosen despite (or perhaps because of) his political animosity. In any event, the unprecedented trial and the possible imprisonment of political opponents create few scenarios in which President Joe Biden’s victory could be considered legitimate.

The Republican National Convention is certain to nominate Trump as its candidate whether he is in attendance or in prison. Nothing is more crucial to the future of this country.
