Trump Warns He Will Not Allow D.C. Mayoral Candidate to Harm the City

Trump Critiques D.C. Mayoral Candidate

President Trump has made it clear he “will not allow” Janice Lewis George, the Democratic candidate for mayor of Washington, D.C., to impose policies he believes would harm the city.

In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump expressed concerns that George intends to “empty the prisons,” transform D.C. into a sanctuary city for undocumented individuals, and reduce police funding. He noted that many people, himself included, have put in significant effort to enhance the safety and reputation of the nation’s capital.

“Communist Janice Lewis George, who is likely to become the Mayor of Washington, D.C., wants to empty the prisons, create a sanctuary city, oppose ICE, welcome criminal undocumented immigrants, undermine anti-crime measures, defund the police, and expand cashless bail—all to destroy our capital,” Trump stated.

He reiterated his view, asserting, “Washington, D.C. will be safe and honorable again,” emphasizing that he and many others have worked hard to achieve that goal. He vowed not to let those he describes as communists jeopardize the city’s progress.

In response to Trump’s remarks, George indicated that she would “stand against those who harm our city and its residents,” according to NBC 4 Washington reporter Mark Segraves. She claimed most of Trump’s allegations were untrue but acknowledged that her administration would engage with the mayor’s office in D.C. to enhance the lives of residents.

“I am open to collaboration with anyone, including the administration, to improve D.C.,” George added. “I will also resist actions that threaten our community.”

Trump’s comments surfaced alongside praise he received from some Democrats for various construction and landscaping initiatives throughout the city, including the restoration of notable monuments and public spaces such as Meridian Hill Park and the fountain at Columbus Circle.

In August 2025, it was reported that footage showed efforts to clear homeless encampments near the Kennedy Center, which followed Trump’s commitment to combat crime in the city.

This occurred shortly after Trump invoked Section 740 of the District of Columbia Autonomy Act, placing the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department under federal control, alongside a pledge to mobilize the National Guard to tackle crime.

George mentioned her willingness to work with various parties, including the president, but also pointed out that “there are limits to that cooperation.” She emphasized the need to protect D.C.’s autonomy and fight for statehood while being open to discussions for the benefit of residents.
