GOP Donors Rally Behind Trump and Pledge Millions After Guilty Verdict

Major Republican donors have pledged millions of dollars in support after former President Donald Trump was convicted on all 34 charges in a Manhattan business records trial on Thursday.

Many conservative donors already see the New York lawsuit as more politically motivated than a matter of justice, reflecting the views of a Republican presidential candidate whom Democrats want to discredit and weaken ahead of the Nov. 5 election against Democrat President Joe Biden.

Reuters Reports These donors are happy to put their money where their mouths are and are offering financial support to Trump ahead of his re-election campaign in 2024.

The outlet noted that megadonors including casino owner Miriam Adelson and hotelier Robert Bigelow have backed Trump and that their money will fuel a wave of pro-Trump advertising, door-to-door canvassing and phone banking in battleground states.

Reuters added that “the ruling prompted some of Trump’s longtime donors to increase their financial support for him, with at least one making a large donation for the first time.”

Robert Bigelow, one of Trump’s leading supporters who has already donated more than $9 million to outside groups supporting Trump, called the criminal charges against the former president a “shameful act.”

“We are sending President Trump another $5 million as we promised,” one Republican megadonor told Reuters.

After the verdict, Sean Maguire, an optimistic Silicon Valley technology investor, posted on the social media site X that he had donated $300,000 to support Trump.

Don Tapia, Trump’s former ambassador to Jamaica, confirmed to the outlet that he and a small network of donor family and friends plan to donate about $250,000 to support Trump in the election.

Tapia told Reuters after Thursday’s guilty plea that the group remains unwavering and aims to donate more than $1 million to pro-Trump spending group MAGA Inc. in the coming weeks.

“We’re going to do everything in our power for him,” said Tapia, who sent Reuters a photo of an American flag flying upside down outside his home in Paradise Valley, Arizona, to protest the verdict.
