President Joe Biden on Friday defended the conviction of former President Donald Trump, arguing it was “reckless” for his silenced political opponents to call the verdict a “fraud.”
President Trump called the trial a “fraud” and vowed to appeal the conviction.
About two hours after Trump’s remarks, Biden directly called out Trump by name in a carefully crafted press conference. “This reaffirms the American principle that no one is above the law,” Biden argued. “Donald Trump has been given ample opportunity to defend himself.”
“The jury heard evidence for five long, five long weeks. After careful deliberation, the jury reached a unanimous verdict,” Biden said, speaking slowly. “They found Donald Trump guilty of all 34 felony counts.”
“It’s reckless. It’s dangerous. It’s irresponsible to say there was fraud just because you don’t like the verdict,” Biden said of his silenced political opponents.

“The justice system must be respected and no one should be allowed to destroy it. That’s it. That’s America. That’s who we are. And God willing, that’s what we always will be,” Biden said.
The Trump campaign announced Friday morning that it had raised $34.8 million from small donors after a Manhattan jury convicted Trump on Thursday. Small donations are meaningful because donors can give multiple times.

“This cannot and should never be allowed to happen to another president,” Trump said Friday, “but this is out of my control. This is bigger than Trump. This is bigger than me.”
“Let’s make America great again,” Trump said. “Remember November 5th.”
