Illinois State Police say an armed homeowner thwarted a plot by a trio of car thieves to break into his house and steal his keys.
The homeowner, who did not want to be made public, He told WGN-TV He described the incident that happened Monday morning at his home on Sheridan Road outside Winnetka.
“There are real problems with the justice system.”
He said that around 5 a.m. while he and his family were sleeping, assailants broke into his office, stole his car keys and tried to flee in his car.
One of the vehicles was parked behind a gate that thieves could not open, and the other was parked in the driveway in front of the home.
of The landlord said He and his wife were woken up by the sound of the Ferrari engine starting. He ran outside with a gun and when he saw the group he yelled for them to stop. He said he threatened to shoot and then heard gunfire in his direction.
He shot the suspects approximately seven times while hiding behind a tree.
Police said one of the suspects fled on foot while the other two fled in a getaway vehicle, believed to be a silver Audi. Dozens of bullet casings were also found at the scene and fingerprints were taken inside the vehicle.
The homeowner said the suspects were wearing masks and appeared calm and orderly, adding that this was the second time the house had been targeted in a burglary in the past two years.
Neighbors were shocked by the incident.
“This is obviously something we’re not used to so it’s pretty surprising and unbelievable,” nearby resident Tim Connell told WGN.
“I think there’s a real problem with the justice system. Not paying the penalty really doesn’t serve anybody in our society,” Kirsten Hertel said.
Police said no one was injured in the shootout and both vehicles were recovered. WGN reported that no suspect description had been released at the time of the call and that police had not made any arrests.
