Commanders owner’s wife says team name will remain ‘for now’

The Washington Commanders (formerly known as the Washington Redskins) may have denied some rumors that the team would revert to its old name.

The team was called the Redskins for 87 years, but in 2020 the organization deemed it offensive and changed its nickname to the Washington Football Team working name until Commanders becomes its official nickname in 2022.

Out kick Commanders owner Josh Harris’ wife, Marjorie Harris, was in Washington, D.C., participating in a day of service when she was reportedly asked about the possibility of reverting to the old name.

“As you can imagine, everyone has an opinion on the name,” Harris said. He told reporters“Some are good, some are bad and some are in between. And I think we have a lot of work to do. So I’m going to put the name issue aside for now until we get things going.”

Harris said he is happy with his team and is pleased with the addition of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, the No. 2 overall draft pick.

“I was in the area all day and kept calling my team Commander.”

The controversy over Washington’s team name has been going on since at least 2016. Perhaps at the height of the political awakening era, or at least at its height, progressive voices declared the Redskins name racist, as 9 in 10 Native Americans in a Washington Post poll found. There was nothing offensive about the name..

The public’s opinion that the name was hurtful apparently didn’t matter as the team ended up changing it, and the name Commanders stuck, despite reports of trademark denials and pressure from Native American groups.

“Honestly, I was in the area all day and I kept calling the team the Commanders,” Harris continued, “and guess what? It sounds pretty good to me, so for now, it’s the Commanders,” she added.

Commanders coach Dan Quinn said in the second week of May 2024, Pirated Commanders merchandiseHis shirt featured the Commanders’ “W” logo with a dangling Native American feather, reminiscent of the old Redskins logo.

He later said wearing it was an error of judgment, but his commanders said they had “no institutional comment” on the matter.

This led to The Washington PostThe results showed that more fans disliked the name Commanders than they liked it.

32% of Commanders fans said they liked or loved the team name, while 57% of the team’s fans said they disliked or hated the name.

Only 31% of DC-area respondents said they like or love the name, while 49% said they dislike or hate it. Among sports fans overall, only 31% said they like or love it, while 53% said they dislike or hate it.
