Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) came under fire on social media for criticizing Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) for her X-post, while also disparaging U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito.

The Bronx congresswoman slammed Greene for posting an upside-down American flag in response to former President Donald Trump’s conviction in New York, and Ocasio-Cortez questioned whether Greene’s comments were inspired by Justice Alito.

“Samuel Alito, who did you learn that from?” the senator commented on Greene’s post on Thursday.

Greene shared the image after President Trump was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records as a way of characterizing the verdict as an injustice against the rule of law in America.

The upside-down flag has been the subject of controversy in recent weeks after The New York Times reported that it was flown upside-down at Alito’s Virginia home before and after the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

The Times article described the flag as a symbol adopted by some Trump supporters who are challenging the results of the 2020 presidential election, and sought to use it to link Alito to pro-Trump election deniers.

However, the Washington Post appeared to deny the Times report, saying, “A Post spokesman said the paper chose not to report on the flag-raising at the time because it appeared to be the work of Martha Ann Alito, not the judge, and because it was linked to a dispute with a neighbor. It was not clear at the time whether the dispute was politically rooted.”

“I was not even aware of the upside-down flag until it was pointed out to me. As soon as I saw it, I asked my wife to take it down, but she refused for several days,” Alito said of the incident in a letter to Democratic senators who had asked him to remove himself from cases related to the 2020 election and Jan. 6.

“Samuel Alito has identified himself as the same man who stormed the Capitol on January 6th, and now he will preside over a trial that will have deep implications for the participants of that rally,” Ocasio-Cortez said in an interview on MSNBC last week, calling for a government investigation into Alito over the flag.

According to The New York Times, an upside-down American flag was displayed outside Alito’s home on January 17, 2021, days after supporters of former President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol. It’s a symbol associated with Trump’s false claims of election fraud. “It was temporarily hung by Mrs. Alito in response to a neighbor’s use of offensive and personally offensive language on a sign in her yard,” Alito said in an emailed statement to the newspaper. While Ocasio-Cortez’s quip was clearly meant to poke fun at the controversy, conservatives in X didn’t find it all that funny.

Conservative activist Bridget Gabriel slammed the MP, saying: “Your constituency is terrible. Turn off your phone and pick up your trash.”

On a conservative talk show, Joe Pagliallo asked, “Instead of hiding behind social media, why don’t you try and debate her? You guys literally work in the same place. Can I get a gin and tonic please?”

Joseph McBride, a lawyer and political commentator, shared an image of a flag used by Native Americans and said: “She learned it from the Native Americans, you communist bitch.”

Conservative commentator Paul Cipla shared a video of lawmakers debating Hunter Biden’s former business partner Tony Bobulinski at a congressional hearing, commenting, “AOC doesn’t even know what RICO is. She shouldn’t use the word ‘learn.'”

“That’s Senator Alito for you,” joked the popular conservative X-account “Three Year Letterman.”

The conservative account End Wokeness responded to a Babylon Bee article with the headline “AOC Demands Alito Reveal Where He Bought Upside-Down US Flag,” mocking the congresswoman.
