A new poll shows President Biden is losing support among voters without a college degree, making the battle for the White House look set to be much tougher than in 2020.
investigation, From Reuters: The survey found that Biden’s approval rating among voters without a four-year college degree is 10 points lower than his approval rating at this point in the 2020 campaign.
Biden had the support of 42% of such voters in 2020, but now it’s just 32%.
Meanwhile, Trump’s approval rating has risen from 42% in 2020 to 44% now.
Voters without college degrees made up nearly 60% of the 2020 electorate and span a wide range of demographics, including Black and Hispanic women, younger voters and suburban mothers.
The poll was conducted before Trump was sentenced on Thursday in Manhattan criminal trial for falsifying business records.
While the Republican Party has often been derided as the party of the rich, the Reuters poll found that Biden still has strong support among voters earning more than $100,000 a year and those with a college degree.
The Biden campaign has dismissed the findings, saying the data doesn’t show the truth and that things will change once the Biden messaging machine really gets going.
“We’re very focused on battleground states and we’re focusing a lot of our outreach, voter contact and campaign work in those battleground states,” Matt Barrett, a pollster for the Biden campaign, told the news agency. “National polls often obscure how a campaign is progressing.”
Opinion polls have consistently predicted a close race, with Trump often leading in key battleground states.
The survey also found that the former president’s approval rating has risen significantly among black and Hispanic voters, core Democratic bases.
