This is not how the Giants were hoping for the start of the season when two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell signed with San Francisco just before the season began.
Snell was placed on the disabled list with an adductor injury but had a 10.42 ERA in five starts.
He has shown regression in allowing hot contact, with his expected weighted on-base percentage of .424 putting him in the bottom 8th percentile of pitchers, per Statcast.
Snell’s strikeout rate of 24.7 is his lowest as a strikeout pitcher since his second year in the MLB, and his walk rate of 11.3% is also poor.
Not all is lost this season for the left-handed pitcher.
We’ve seen Snell bounce back from slumps before, but Sunday’s game will see him take on the Yankees, the most powerful slugging team in baseball.
The Yankees lead MLB in home runs, slugging percentage and barrel percentage.
Aaron Judge and Juan Soto have combined to form a ruthless No. 2 and No. 3 hitting duo, ranking No. 1 and No. 2 in xwOBA.
Nestor Cortes has been a reliable part of the Yankees’ historic starting rotation, but his consistency is best demonstrated at home.

Looking at his stats, he has a 1.12 ERA at Yankee Stadium and a 6.16 ERA on the road.
Oracle Park is a pitcher’s playground, but for Cortes, this will be the first time in his career he’ll face a Giants organization that can get on base.
