Heavy police presence as ‘Israel Day on Fifth’ parade set to make its way through NYC

New York City is set to hold its annual pro-Israel parade on Sunday. The Associated Press report As the war in Gaza continues, security will be stepped up and unity will be emphasized.

The parade came after Hamas launched a surprise attack on the Jewish state on October 7, massacring 1,200 Israelis and kidnapping hundreds more, the deadliest attack in Israel’s history. Since then, pro-Palestinian protesters have flooded college campuses across the United States.

“This is an atmosphere of unwavering, ironclad solidarity to bring the hostages home and unwavering love and pride in our Jewish identity.”

The parade was previously called “Celebrating Israel,” but organizers said they were changing the name in light of violent anti-Semitic attacks around the world.

The parade, dubbed “Israel Day on 5th Avenue” because it will take place on 5th Avenue, will focus on unity, resilience and strength, according to Mark Treyger, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council.

“This is not an atmosphere of confetti and music,” Treyger said, “but rather an atmosphere of unwavering, ironclad solidarity in bringing the hostages home, and unwavering love and pride in our Jewish identity.”

Fox News Digital report Police Commissioner Edward Cavan said there would be an increased police presence in the area, reportedly including “screening checkpoints at points of entry, as well as bike teams, air squads, police dogs, traffic units and other specialist units”.

Cabán also said officers from the NYPD’s Counterterrorism and Intelligence Bureau were on scene, adding that there was “no specific or credible threat to the parade or to the entire city of New York.”

“For 60 years, people from all over the world have come to New York to celebrate our city’s proud Jewish heritage. Sunday’s parade is the largest celebration outside of Israel, and the NYPD will be there to see that everything runs smoothly,” Cavan said.

“The eyes and ears of New York play a vital role in protecting our city, so if you see something that doesn’t seem right, please let an officer know,” he added.

It is unclear how many people are expected to attend the event.
