A 14-year-old boy was shot and killed at a Brooklyn public housing project Sunday morning, police said.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, was found with a gunshot wound to the chest after officers responded to a 911 call just before 10:30 a.m. at Howard Houses in Brownsville, according to the NYPD.
Police said the boy was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police sources said the suspect was in custody and a gun was recovered.
New York has seen an increase in violent incidents targeting young people in recent months, with a series of bloody incidents last month leaving two young people dead and six injured.
NYPD Superintendent David Gates told The Washington Post at the time that 11% of gun arrests last year were minors, up 120% from 2018, while roughly a quarter of young people arrested for gun possession in 2021 were either the perpetrator or victim of a mass shooting within two years.
