Israel and Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed terrorist group in southern Lebanon, are on the brink of war after firing dozens of rockets and projectiles into Israel over the weekend, sparking widespread fires near Israel’s northern border.
Israel was retaliating against a series of earlier attacks by targeting dozens of terrorist positions in southern Lebanon. Unlike Hezbollah, Israel is targeting military installations rather than civilians, which has targeted both since the beginning of October.
As these fighting continues, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are preparing for war in the north while seeking to defeat the last remaining Hamas battalions in the Gaza Strip and end the war there.
The Israel Defense Forces issued a statement on Sunday.
This week, the IDF conducted exercises at the General Staff Command Center as part of its preparations for operations in the northern region.
The exercises, which took place at Northern Command Headquarters and all IDF branches and stations, involved regular and reservist troops and included scenarios simulating an escalation of the war in the northern region as well as a multi-regional war.
As part of the exercise, the 36th Division conducted an extensive division-level simulation involving combat scenarios in the northern region.
During the exercise, Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, together with Northern Command Commander Maj. Gen. Ori Goldin, Israeli Air Force Commander Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar, Director of the Intelligence Directorate (J2) Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva, Director of the Operations Directorate (J3) Maj. Gen. Oded Basiuk, and other commanders, visited the Northern Command Operations Center, the regional command center, and the Israeli Air Force Operations Center in Kirya.
The IDF continues to constantly strengthen its readiness and learn lessons in the course of war.
Hezbollah is violating UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Second Lebanon War and banned Hezbollah from establishing military facilities south of the Litani River.
Neither the Lebanese army nor the UN have the will or ability to enforce the resolution, and President Joe Biden’s October warning to Hezbollah and Iran to “stop it” has been ineffective in deterring the terrorist groups.
