House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, R-N.Y., defended President Biden after he said last year that his son, Hunter Biden, “did nothing wrong” in connection with a federal investigation into his taxes and gun-related crimes.
Jeffries backed Biden on NBC’s “Meet the Press” when asked about Biden’s comments last year about the investigation into his son and whether it was “appropriate” for the president to intervene in the case at the time.
“President Biden made the comments as a loving father would, as I would hope any loving father would. Of course, Hunter Biden, like Donald Trump, is entitled to a presumption of innocence and a trial by jury,” Jeffries said.
“And the Department of Justice will proceed in that manner, present the facts and the law, and then we will have to await the verdict of a jury on Hunter Biden’s guilt or innocence,” he added.
Biden said Hunter Biden “did nothing wrong” in connection with the years-long investigation into his son. His comments came before his son was indicted on tax and firearms charges last year.
Biden’s son is scheduled to go on trial this week in Delaware on federal firearms charges, after prosecutors said Hunter Biden bought guns illegally by falsely representing himself on paperwork as a drug user.
Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to federal firearms charges in October. An attempt to delay the gun trial failed last month, and previous efforts to have the charges dismissed have also failed.
