Simmers joined the Los Angeles Times in 1990 and became a columnist a decade later. According to the newspaperHe stayed with the paper for 23 years and emerged as one of its most prominent commentators.

Simmers claims that his once-praised work has suddenly come under scrutiny since he suffered a mild stroke in 2013 and was subsequently diagnosed with complex migraine syndrome.
His column brought in $234,000 a year, but he was suspended in June 2013 for what the paper considered ethical violations after it cut its publication days from three to two and said the column was “poorly written or reflected poorly on the paper,” according to the article.
