“It’s not that I was afraid to perform like I am now,” she explained, “but going from two years alone in lockdown and seeing only one person a day to knowing that millions of people are watching the Grammys is a huge shock to your nervous system. Anyone who has ever put themselves in a position to be observed and judged is brave. It doesn’t matter if it’s eight people or eight million people. The fear is there.”

“Before I went on stage, the moment the curtains went up, I shouted at the top of my lungs, ‘I am free!'” Cyrus continued. “When I was 20 or 21, it might have sounded more like, ‘I don’t care what people think. I’m just being me.'”

“So when Beyoncé reached out to me about the music, I thought of it right away because it really encompasses our relationship. I told her, ‘We don’t have to be country. We are country. We were country.’ I said, ‘Look, you’re from Texas and I’m from Tennessee, so there’s a lot of us in this song.'”

“It was a dream come true to not only sing but write for Beyoncé,” Cyrus added.
