While several major corporations have surprisingly stopped decorating themselves with rainbows and “Pride” slogans this month, Walmart has not.
The retail giant has unveiled a new line of LGBTQ-themed apparel just in time for Pride Month, revealing its slogan to be “#PrideAlways.”
“Wal-Mart has woken up now,” Pat Gray says dejectedly, “just like everyone else.”
In commercials promoting #PrideAlways, a series of LGBTQ people hold up their favorite items from the collection or items they’ve made themselves, accompanied by slogans like “I heart gay people” and “totes gay.”
“I think ‘Pride Always’ is more than just a slogan, it’s ultimately a sense of community,” one gay man said in the video. “I’m really grateful to Walmart for giving me the opportunity to spread a little happiness,” another man said.
“I’m amazed at the artistic talent I’m surrounded by and I’m really excited to be a part of it,” he added.
“They’re promoting merch for Pride Month,” Jeffrey tells Gray. “That’s all they’re doing,” Gray agrees.
The company’s announcement comes just weeks after rival Target said it would only sell its Pride collection in select stores — a decision that, of course, came after the company received backlash from conservatives for promoting transgender and gay clothing styles for kids.
Gray, like many other Americans, is tired of June being a month dedicated to other people’s sexual preferences.
“Why should I celebrate their gender confusion?” Gray asked, adding, “If you want to celebrate those traits, go ahead, but don’t pressure me into it.”
