Cucumbers recalled in 14 US states over potential salmonella contamination

Whole cucumbers shipped to more than a dozen states are being recalled after samples tested positive for Salmonella.

According to a recall notice issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Fresh Start Produce Sales is recalling produce shipped between May 17 and 21 due to the possibility that the produce may be contaminated with a bacteria that can cause serious infections in children, the infirm, elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

In some cases, these infections can be fatal.

According to the recall, the recalled cucumbers were shipped in bulk cartons directly to retail distribution centers, wholesalers and foodservice businesses in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

The recall was issued after the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture learned that samples tested positive for the bacteria and notified the company.

Meanwhile, the FDA is conducting whole genome sequencing to determine if the sample is linked to the ongoing Salmonella outbreak investigation.

“While it is unlikely that these cucumbers will ever be sold again, anyone who has any of the recalled product should not eat it and should destroy and discard it or return it to their place of purchase for a refund,” the company said.

Fresh Start Produce Sales has notified customers who received the recalled products directly from the company and asked them to remove the products from sale, and has asked its direct customers to notify their own customers.

Fresh Start Produce Sales said the additional press release to the FDA was “to provide appropriate warning to consumers.”

The company is also urging customers to check with their retailer or place of purchase to see if the recalled cucumbers were sold at their store.

According to the FDA, Salmonella illness usually begins within 12 to 72 hours of eating contaminated food and typically lasts four to seven days.

Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.

Health officials say in rare cases, the infection can allow the bacteria to enter the bloodstream, causing more serious illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
