Rep. Rob Menendez (Dynamo, J.D.), the son of embattled Sen. Bob Menendez, has survived a primary challenge despite criminal charges that put his father’s political future in jeopardy.
Menendez’s opponent is Hoboken Mayor Ravi Barra, who has sought to link the first-term Democrat to his father and accused the two of running Garden State politics as a “political machine.”
“It’s time to move on from the party leaders and the Menendez camp that have dominated New Jersey politics. In Congress, we are beholden to no one but our voters,” Barra wrote to X on Monday.
Republicans see the embattled Mr. Menendez’s independent run as a chance to retake the Senate seat.

Menendez’s victory over Barra all but guarantees him reelection in November in a safely blue district that includes parts of Newark and Jersey City.
Menendez’s father and wife face more than 10 criminal charges in connection with allegations that they used their positions as senators to benefit the Egyptian government and interfere in the case against three New Jersey businessmen who have also been indicted.
A particularly damning criminal complaint alleges that Senator Bob Menendez accepted bribes of cash and gold bars in exchange for supporting Cairo, leading him to temporarily step down from his position as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

There is no evidence linking Menendez’s son to his father’s alleged crimes, but the indictment has reignited frustration among New Jersey progressives over the political control the Menendez family has wielded in the state for decades.
Before joining Congress in January 2023, Rob Menendez served as commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a role he was appointed to by New Jersey’s progressive Governor Phil Murphy.
He ran to represent New Jersey’s 8th Congressional District in 2022 following the retirement of former five-term Congressman Albio Siles (D-NJ), and won handily with 83% of the vote.

Syers will represent the 8th Congressional District after congressional redistricting took place. He previously represented the 13th Congressional District, which was previously represented by Sen. Bob Menendez from 1993 until he was elected to the Senate in 2006.
Despite his father’s political troubles, Rob Menendez has garnered the support of the top three House Democrats: House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, House Minority Whip Katherine Clark of Massachusetts and House Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar of California.
