At about 8:30 p.m., the couple arrived at the intersection of Grand Avenue and McClurg Court in Streeterville when they were suddenly attacked from behind by a group of teenagers. “It all happened from behind us. First someone came up to my husband and hit him in the head,” Nina said of her husband.

Councilman Brian Hopkins has since contacted the State Attorney’s Office and hopes the charges will be upgraded to felony offenses. “Both victims suffered serious injuries,” he told FOX 32.

Nina and her husband are still trying to make sense of their attack, which appears to have no motive. “They didn’t steal anything. They’re saying, ‘These streets are ours. They belong to us. You shouldn’t be walking around,'” she recalled.

“They dragged my dress along the ground and said, ‘These streets belong to us. You can’t walk around prancing around in your little dresses.’ They were saying things that made no sense to me because they don’t know me personally.”

Police told FOX 32 the incident remains under investigation. They reached out to the State Attorney’s Office inquiring about whether other charges may be filed but did not receive a response.
